The Westside Elementary Schools Make the Grade

Do you know the number one question families with young children ask me when they begin looking at homes? Inevitably, they ask me about Westside elementary schools. That’s not surprising because great schools are critical to home buying and selling.

Because the question of the best elementary schools is top of mind for my clients, I began looking for a resource to help them discover all the great schools on The Westside. GreatSchools.org does just that and is a terrific resource for reviews and rankings particularly for Public Schools. And, it turns out that many Westside Elementary Schools are top of the line.

GreatSchools Is a Great Tool

A good way to determine whether Westside elementary school in any given neighborhood is doing a good job is by going to GreatSchools.org. Put in the city and zipcode or the school name and take a look at the ratings of individual schools. The ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10 and broken down into three categories. Below average schools rank 1 to 3 and are shown in red. Average schools rank 4 to 7 and are shown in yellow. Above average schools rank 8 to 10 and are shown in green.

In California, this rating is based on student achievement as determined by the standardized tests. It is the overall average of how well students do on each grade and subject test. The ratings are determined based on how they perform to the average of all other students in California. According to GreatSchools, “ The distribution of the GreatSchools Rating in a given state looks like a bell curve, with higher numbers of schools getting ratings in the “average” category, and fewer schools getting ratings in the “above average” or “below average” categories.”

Nonetheless, a large number of The Westside elementary schools not only rank in the above average category but rank a 10 out of 10 on the scale.
